-
- A ham radio operator friend is loosing manual dexterity due to
- a debilitating disease. He enjoys using the morse code, but
- will soon be unable to send. I want to adapt his PC so he can
- send by speaking into a microphone (using voice recognition).
-
- Questions:
- 1) does an inexpensive system already exist aimed specifically
- at this task?
- 2) what recommendations do (experienced) people have regarding
- inexpensive, but useful voice recognition develpment software
- and hardware for the PC? My PC has a 16 bit Soundblaster,
- so I would like to develop on that platform.
-
- Thanks.

-
- 4S7, SRI LANKA. The DX NewsLetter (DXNL) reports that two Belgium
- operators will be active for the next several weeks. Be looking for
- 4S7/ON4IPA and 4S7/ON4AMI from here. Meanwhile, 4S7WP is usually active
- on 20 meters CW between 1115 to 1230z.
-
- 4U1UN CARDS. On April 18th, approximately 2000 cards will be mailed
- out from Lorain, Ohio, reports Jerry, WB8LFO. Cards for 4U48UN are now
- being worked on and when they are finished, they too will also be
- mailed. Jerry states the goal is to have all the cards (that were sent
- direct to W8CZN and WB8LFO and not bureau cards) up-to-date by Dayton's
- HamVention. Now that the cards are past the paper logs and the computer
- logs are being used, the processing should be a lot faster. Please DO
- NOT send second requests until an announcement has been made that all
- cards have been processed. Also, please do not send cards to AA2FN,
- only to W8CZN. Jerry also reported that some people are misreading the
- callbook address of W8CZN and are sending cards to Kurt, N8CZN, in
- Michigan. The correct address is: Jim Tullis, 7226 Huntington Dr.,
- Hudson, Ohio 44236.
-
- 6Y, JAMAICA. Sean, KF9PL, will be active from May 25-30th and plans to
- be a participant in the CQ WW WPX CW Contest as a Single-Op low power
- entry. He will be using a special prefix for the contest and has applied
- for the call sign, 6Y0DX. Before the contest he will be active on CW,
- SSB and RS-12. He wants to try to be on 40/80 meters as much as possible.
-
- 9N, NEPAL. The DXNL reports that DL1EMX as become active as 9N1EM and
- was heard on 14184 kHz at 1607z. There have been no reports of activity
- on the Ohio/Penn Network as of yet.
-
- CY9, ST.PAUL ISLAND (IOTA NA094/GRID SQUARE GN03AT). Another group has
- announced that they will be active from this island off the coast of
- Nova Scotia. St. Paul is known as "the graveyard of the Atlantic",
- because of the ship wrecks and 3000 deaths these waters have seen.
- Dates for the operation will be 4-5 full days (WEATHER PERMITING)
- during June 10-19th. The operating team will consist of four operators:
- N9JCL/CY9 Scott, K0SN/CY9 Tom, AA9GZ/CY9 Bob and WC9E/CY9 Paul. They
- will be running two stations around the clock (as long as the propagation
- is good and the coffee is hot). The team will be active on 10-80 meters
- (including the WARC bands) operating SSB, CW and RTTY. They request to
- please give full calls in the pile-ups. QSL via K0SN, Tom Hellem, W6321
- Two Mile Rd., Porterfield, WI 54159 (SASE + ONE GREEN STAMP).
-
- KG4, GUANTANAMO BAY. To commemorate the 500 year anniversary of
- Christopher Columbus arriving in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, a special events
- station, KG4CC, will be operating to celebrate this historic occurrence.
- The station will be operating on the exact spot in which Columbus first
- set foot in 1494 and will be active for 24 hours starting at 0000z on
- April 30th. Operations will take place on both CW and SSB modes, using
- the following frequencies:
- CW - 3525-3545, 7025-7045, 14025-14045, 21100-21120 and 28100-28120
- SSB - 3850-3870, 7225-7245, 14225-14245, 21300-21320 and 28300-28320
-
- Individuals who make contact with KG4CC, will be eligible to receive a

- credit. Address all QSL and certificate inquires to: Guantanamo Amateur

- respectively. They will be active from May 24 to 30 and plan to be
- active in the CQ WPX CW Contest as PJ8X. Chod and Frank are going to
- build a permanent station for use by future DXpeditioners/Contesters
- who want to operate from the Simson Bay Lagoon area of Sint Maarten.
- Details will be in an upcoming issue of "The DX Magazine". QSL

- Subject: Proposed Illinois law to pre-empt antenna restrictions
- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- Yes Clark, a favorable ruling at the US Supreme Court would be nice, but also
- a bit chancey. Persuading elected legislators as opposed to appointed judges
- would seem to be a lot easier. By getting organized and pushing for our rights,
- I believe we stand a better chance of getting what we want.
-
- If nothing else, having Illinois legislators aware of the problem and receiving
- numerous calls of support at a time when Illinois is flooding again has
- got to be good for our cause.
-
- What harm does it do to have state laws that mimic federal regulations?
- Stomping some state for making a law opposed to federal regulations would
- prove very little as the case law there appears to be pretty clear
-
- Let's get our rights written in law instead of court case decisions. Besides,
- writing or calling one's legislator is a lot cheaper (and quieter) than
- slugging it out in court.

- Many years ago Myself and members of the SISG Southern Indiana
- Speleo Group (non NSS) took the first magentic cave mapper underground
- under the direst of emergency siduations. Two men drowned in Showfarm cave
- in Indiana and we were in the rescue team. We both communicated to the
- surface, CW, and maped the underground passage with a 2Kc magnetic field.
- This unit would work thru at least 400 feet of solid limestone.
- Later Richard Blendz and members of the Bloomington Ind. Grotto NSS
- Frank Reed, Dwight Hazen and others develouped an Uppersideband 30Khz
- transceiver system to talk and map to the surface. As K9CUN said there were
- articles in the NSS news about this. Early 1970,s
- Don't count on reflections in caves to propogate RF. Cave walls are
- GREAT absorbers of rf. If we were going to be in a cave for days we would
- run a fine (near invisable) wire from outside in the trees back thru the
- cave to base camp. We could talk anywhere in the cave within site of the
- wire and for a limited distance outside.
- We did run tests on 80Meters between two caves once CW and heard
- signals thru @ 1/2 mile of rock.
